that their doorway had been blown in and smashed to pieces. Three dead men lay under the ruins and stepping inside to see Col. Brazenor I had to tread on the mangled head of a 5th Div officer who lay dead and pinned in the debris. Found that Brazenors people had been having a very hard time and were much cut up. Moss and a number of other officers were very badly wounded. Others killed. They seem to have got well out but still short of their objective. On the right the 5th Div had a partial success and entering Peronne had collared a good wad of prisoners. I then went down to the 24th and found that their portal had been treated similarly – five dead men were lying there under a blanket. And sticky stuff on the floor was covered with dry grass.
