The Battalion formed up for inspection in the morning and looked pitifully small with its 269 men on parade. We only have a ration strength of 450. I then made an inspection of the billets and find the men not badly placed. After lunch I rode to Amiens. The old Cathedral stands out and is visible over the plains for many miles. Rode into the city any amount of damage being apparent. Many civilians have now returned and are in the shops and houses. Got into the Place Gambetta and put the horse up at the Hotel de la Paix. Went first to the Cathedral which has had a charmed life against bombardments of all kinds as the surrounding houses all show signs of damage and destruction. Some of the windows have been destroyed but from many
