Tuesday 10th December
Left Paris at 8 AM and reached DHQ at 5 PM Travelled via Daumanter-Nanteuil-Crepy-Attechy-Chaucy-La Fere-Saues-La Capelle and Avesnes. Saw historical old Chateau at Pierrefond erected I understand by Napoleon Louis of Orleans in 1390 at great cost. Brought back with me Lts. Murray and Watson of 2nd DA. Chauny and La Fere much damaged by shell fire and country from [indecipherable] to [indecipherable] much intersected by trenches and wire and must have been the scene of heavy fighting. Charley due to cross Channel – GHQ permits have been supplied him. Gen. Martin showing slight improvement. I brought him some wine.
Wednesday 11th December
Received wire from Pope that Charley had not arrived at Boulogne. Wired Pope to wait for this evening's boat. Col. MacKenzie returning to Australia came to see me. Arranging that he shall be sent off by car tomorrow direct to Boulogne. He told me of his period at the Base and feel he has been rather unfairly treated. Dined with us at night.
Thursday 12th October December
Inspected sample units of all three Brigade Groups Transport. A good many matters required attention before a uniform standard can be attained.
Capt. Bean who has been with 5th & 6th Bdes. completing his records of recent fighting lunched with us and later proceeded to 7th Bde. Final honours for last battle (other than V.Cs.) awarded.
Friday 13th October December
Inspected sample teams from units of Div Arty Very good turnout. Discussed with ADMS details concerning V.D. in Charleroi and measures to be taken to protect our men. Col. Crothers is to return to Australia, leaving tomorrow.
Received word from A.I.F. HQrs. London that Charley is to arrive in Boulogne on 14th inst. Capt. Bayley returned from Nice.
Saturday 14th October December
In morning interviewed Company Commander (Major Charlton) and O.C. Trains with a driver who had a grievance.
