At Lille called on Gen. Birdwood and saw Gen. White and Gen. Strauberger now MGRA. Lunched at Army HQrs. and met General Orth, Chief of Belgian Mission. King George today visited the Division before my arrival, Gen. Robertson acting as Divisional Commander. The Division has been in the area for a few days having previously spent 3 days at Bohain immediately after leaving Bellay.
Monday 2nd December
At 9.45 AM called on Gen. Hobbs at Corps HQrs., Avesnes. At 11 AM motored to old battle fields at Montauban and Beaurevoir line. Then during afternoon we met the King at Belloner Farm accompanied by Gen. Rawlinson and personal staff. Gen. Charles of 25th Div., Gen. Jackson of 50th Div. and myself had to explain the operations of our various Divisions. The King was interested to hear how my arm was getting on, he remembered seeing me at Corps H. Qrs. at Bertangles when I had it in a sling in August last. Returned to HQrs. at 5 PM.
Called on General Martin at No. 61 CGS. He is critically ill with pneumonia, but today shows a slight improvement.
Col. Miles and Capt. Ware to mess area near Charleroi to finally fix Divisional HQrs.
Tuesday 3rd December
Remained in office all day writing up diary and attending to private and official correspondence.
Miles & Wood returned from forward area. Gen. Martin improving.
Wednesday 4th December
Writing up diary and account of surrender of German Fleet. Met Brigadiers and CRA at 2.30 PM. Discussed proposal to erect 2nd Aus Div monument at Mt. St. Quentin. Unanimously approved and committee appointed to at once collect subscriptions. Cost will be £1000.
Thursday 5th December
Visited billets at Marcinelle near Charleroi. Travelled via Avesnes, Maubeuge & Mons to Charleroi and returned via Beaumont to Cartignies. People of Marcinelle very anxious to have us with them and they are giving us of their very best. All the
