billets will be exceedingly comfortable. We had no time to look round the Mons battle field. That experience must come later. Gen. Godley and 22nd Corps HQrs. are in the town. Gen. Wisdom also today forward in new area.
Friday 6th December
During morning remained at DHQ and attended to correspondence etc. In afternoon attended Conference at Corps HQrs. Details concerning moves to new area, educational and trade proposals, etc., were discussed by Divisional Commanders with the Corps Commander. Informed that the Prince of Wales is to stay for some two weeks with the Australian Corps and wishes to meet officers and men.
Saturday 7th December
Left DHQ at 8 AM to visit Gen. Godley at Mons, & Army Commanders of 1st and 3rd Armies at Valenciennes & Cambrai respectively. Gen. Godley away on leave. Learned that 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions are located in Mons. At 1st Army HQrs. saw General Alexander MGRA. Army Commander and MGGS both absent. Found that 3rd Army has moved to Flexicourt the old HQrs. of 4th Army. From Cambrai came home via Bellicourt, St. Quentin and Bohain. Called on Gen. Martin at No. 61 CCS at Bohain. Found him very low indeed.
Sunday 8th December
Received wire from GHQ stating that Charley is being issued with permit for France from 10th to 18th inst. Lt. Pope took GOC 7th Bde. to Boulogne. Mrs. Wisdom is ill and is to be operated upon. Wrote letters. Wet day.
Monday 9th November
Col. Miles going on leave to Parisand the Riviera. Took him to Parisby car via Vervins-Marle-Laon-Soissons-Villers Cotteret-and Meaux. Journey from Laon to Soissons along the Chemin de Daine exceedingly interesting. There are evidences of very severe fighting. Arrived Paris4.30 PM. Took rooms at Astrea Hotel, Rue Caumartin. Before dinner called on Madame Equer. Dined with Col. O'Connell of Base. Afternoon tea at Coro – dinner at Hotel. Parisilluminations much improved and streets thronged.
