Cause, I shall not take upon me to determine:  but content myself with saying, that in six Months stay, I never had an opportunity of seeing the inside of a Portugese [Portuguese] Gentlemans House;  tho' several of their Noblesse were very civil, when they met us:  they never offered more than the civility of the present moment, as a place in the Box at the Opera, &c.

They are said to be extremely Proud, & as ignorant:  & from the very little I saw of them, I am much inclined to believe not unjustly.  Learning is almost totally confined to their Convents, where indeed it an inferiour Style:  for as one of our Poets tell us,

   Where none admire, how useless to excell.
