November 1766.

Novr.17th.  Arrived from Newfoundland in the River Tagus:  the Larboard Shore seems to be lined with small Batteries, the whole way from the Rock of Lisbon up: St. Julians Castle Mounts a great many Guns, but the People must be dreadfully exposed to the shot of any Ship that attempted it.

And well as I remember, arrived in London Jan.ry 30.th 1767. 

Bogie is a round Fort also stuck full of Guns, built upon a Sand, always surrounded by the Tide in the mouth of the Tagus;  in this their State Prisoners are kept: we came to an Anchor under Belam [Belem]Castle, which is likewise surrounded by the Water;  it is more like a Church than a Fort, & in its Situation appearing rather to float, than be built on a solid foundation:  it makes a pretty appearance.

Tho' we came to an Anchor by 11 o'clock, we were obliged to wait
