Divorce is permitted to either party, though the weaker vessel does not resort to such a measure unless well backed by powerful relatives : if the husband wishes to free himself, he general arranges the matter quietly with some group- or blood-brother of his, gets him to take her, and holding her by the wrist, hands her over.
43. Treatment of Widows.  The widow belongs to the brother of her late husband, though her own group- or blood-brother has the greatest say as to which one of her late spouse's brothers she has to be given to. There are often great ructions over arranging this matter : however, when once handed over by the wrist, matters are settled. The widow does not retain any of her husband's property.
44.Infanticide. Infanticide was never prevalent until the Europeans came, and half-caste children appeared. the aboriginal paterfamilias does this by stamping upon the child's chest. Hislop has only known of one case of true-blooded twins.
