Moved out from Jericho at dusk en route for Es Salt. [As Salt] Rode down across the pontoon bridge over the Jordan in terrific dust. Most horses very frightened at the swinging of the bridge which only had hessian sides. Half the column got lost in the dust & rode almost under the hills of Jordan. Turks had the wind up. Star shells everywhere & heavy artillery opened at random. 10th Div. are attacking the [indecipherable] Road. The lost columns met before dawn & concentrated under lee of hills. 4th Brigade heavily shelled in the valley. We were white with dust after our night ride, mostly at gallop.
