severely. Your son had a marvellous escape. He was with Connor when the latter was hit & has holes in his uniform & deep cuts in his boots from the shell fragments. He kept his head splendidly in the most trying of circumstances & without waiting for the reinforcements which were being rushed up to him, he retook his lost trenches with the few men he had available. Unfortunately the Boche took 2 valuable trench mortars, which a fool who was in charge of a trench battery left in the front line contrary to orders. This has been seriously taken up by the Divisional General & the loss of these guns has rather detracted from the good work of the battalion, & of B. Coy. in particular, on that never to be forgotten night. Another battalion has since retaliated by raiding the German trenches, taking several prisoners &
