     I was strongly solicited by General Sir Robt Brownrigg - to Extend my Visit upon the Island & to accompany him for an Excursion into the interior - Nothing could have been more desirable - but the period of my absence from India - had nearly reached the time limited - and beyond which I should have lost my claims to be received in India with my rank.

     On my arrival in Bengal I learn't that both Dr. Buchanan and Mr. Colebroke had left India; - that the Botanical Garden was was in charge of a person from the Danish Settlement of Serampore, and that Lord Moira was Not Expected down the Country before the Middle of October; under such Circumstances, I deemed in my duty to forward several letters I had Charge of for his Lordship - and the one you were pleased to honor me with I thought I could not with propriety, withold therefore sent it under Cover with the rest from the Ship - soon after I arrived in Calcutta I rec:d his Lordship's acknowledgement of them - and at the first Levee after his Lordships return to Calcutta - He was pleased to thank me personally and to say he should be happy
