Calcutta October 30th 1815

Dear Sir,

     Encouraged by the kind manner you were pleased to express your desire of my communication, I take the earliest opportunity since my arrival in Calcutta, to fulfill that injunction;  I have however to lament the incidents of a very Short Voyage were too few to furnish materials for an interesting letter or to render my Communication worthy of your time for perusal. 

     The English papers will have Announced to the public the departure of the Carnatic and Ships in Company from St Helens on the 27th of May - on the 29th we lost Sight of the English Coast - and at day light on the 7th of June made the Island of Madeira - we coasted along its Northn side - rounding the Western Extremity and so near the Shore as to give us a Charming View of the Vineyards and other amusing objects but were not indulged with any Communications from the Shore - the Ld Castlereah & Minerva were the Ships in Company with the Cearnatic - we parted on the        in the Latde       & Longitude -       the latter standing a more Northn Course her destination being Ceylon - the Others proceeding to Bengal - on the 3d of Septr we Anchored in the Road of Colombo - on the 15th. of the same Month left it, and on the 24th Anchored in Pilots Water Off the Sand Heads in the
