Journal for the Month of July 1817

B.G. Cattura To introduce order and regularity in the Garden I have Judged it to be the first step towards that much desired object to form a Linnæan arrangement and for that purpose I have chosen a commodious valley will sheltered  from the sea breeze situated between the hills called the Botanic hill and the one that the Bungaloo and Garden Godowns stand upon, being already will drained by the late Proprietor's fo the purpose of growing the Sugar Cane a Canal being cut down the middle with a cross drain or two, the drains I mean to build with dry stones and then cover them over and trenche the ground  Cleared and prepared the ground, round the Godowns of dead Jack trees and Jungle Plants for the reception of the Orange trees tied up last month.

B.G. Slave Island. Padie Boat still Employed bringing mould, Paddy husks and manure, reduced the Plat of grass before the house into an oval and made a few alterations in the main walk, planted a hedge of Sugar Cane in the narrow border lately made for the purpose of forming an intermediate fence for sheltering a young hedge of the Limonia trifoliata, lately planted.

G.G. Fort Colombo At the beginning of this month sowed spring grove cucumbers which I brought from England, and which now produce plenty of fruit  the only successful method of growing Cabbage I find is by slipping of the side branches and putting them in as cuttings and transplanting them after they are well rooted, sowed Lettuce, Endive, etc.
