The 14th. Brigade on our right encountered similar opposition, and by the evening of the 30th. after a very severe day's fighting, the line ran generally through A.22.c.2.o (where junction was maintained with left of the 14th. Brigade) through A.21.c.9.8., through A.14.d.2.5., thence along GILLEMONT CRESCENT, LONE TREE TRENCH, KNOLL TRENCH. Portion of the KNOLL had been recaptured during the day by the British Division on our left. The personnel of the American Division who had been fighting with the units of this Division, were ordered to withdraw form the forward system and reorganise at their own wagon lines.
Instructions were issued that vigorous patrolling was to be continued during the night of 30th Sept/1st Oct., and pressure against the enemy maintained.
8. Operation of 1st. Oct. 1918
Early in the morning of the 1st October, patrol reports were received that the enemy's resistance was weakening, and progress was being made by both the 10th. and 11th. Brigades towards BONY. The resistance and machine gun fire was still being maintained by the enemy, particularly on the front and left of the 10th. Brigade, from the direction of VENDHUILLE, the trenches around KNOB WOOD and MACQINCOURT FARM.
An attack by the British Division on our left had succeeded in driving the enemy from VENDHUILLE during the early morning. By 10.0 a.m.BONY and trenches in vicinity were reported definitely as in our possession.
Throughout the day, the pressure by the 10th. and 11th. Brigades was maintained against the enemy, and by noon a line, A.16. central, BONY POINT, THE KNOB and the Northern entrance of the CANAL TUNNEL had been reached, with patrols out in front North-east towards LE CATELET; and the whole of the HINDENBURG system was in our possession.
In the afternoon of 1st. October, the enemy was still found to be occupying trenches in the vicinity of MAQUINCOURT FARM and HIDDEN TRENCH , and a company of the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion was accordingly despatched to the 10th. Brigade to protect their left rear and to link up with the right of the 50th British Division near VENDHUILLE.
During the afternoon and evening, the Brigades of the Division reorganised their battalions, and arrangements were made for the continuance of of the operation for the capture of LE CATELET and COUY. Instructions were, however, received from Australia Corps for the consolidation of the ground in our possession, and the troops were to obtain all the rest possible in view of future operations.
The enemy still remaining in the bend of the CANAL near MACQINCOURT FARM were driven out during the night 1st/2nd October by patrols of the 10th Brigade.
Beyond shelling of the captured trenches, the enemy undertook no action during the night.
