the absence of artillery support put a direct attack out of the question .

7.      The movement of tanks and enemy shelling proved most serious obstacles to the maintenance of telephone communications, which were repeatedly cut and (owing to the length of the lines) frequently in several places at the same time.   The transmission of reports and orders were very seriously affected by this matter.

8.       The condition of the country - old shelled area - and the rainy weather made movement very slow, and also involved much hardship for the troops. In order to minimise this, an exchange of battalions between the 9th and 11th. brigades was effected;.
