On a hot summer's day we crossed across the hill, past Bapaume along winding roads passing through country which had been stubbornly contested. There were some fine Chateaux in ruins and strong systems of dugout fortifications. The excessive heat caused a large number of men to drop out, & the Ambulance waggon was taxed to the utmost.
