Then wrote some more letters.

23.12.18.
An advance party moved out early to the new village & we moved out at 11 am. Needless to state it rained all the time. Very heavy too. We were wet some long before we started on the march. The name of the village is Beaurieux & is about ½ an hour's walking from Hestrud & also about the same from Solre le Chateau. The billets here are only as good as at Hestrud for the men but for the officers they are cruel. 'B' Coy can't get a mess at all. It's taken us all our time to get billeted even. Put the wind up the Major about the billets. Was very funny. Our mess is cruel now. Have one room to cook in, eat in & for the cook to sleep in. Not a bit of use at all. Worried everybody all day about it anyway.

24.12.18
Real bonny day. Scriv & I got a billet. The old lady here had been carried to Cologne & made to work there while the Fritz used her home. Tried hard to get it for a mess but failed 'cos the 1st M.G crowd had played up. Still haven't a mess. Have walked round all the village & can't find one. Tonight we moved (borrowed from our house here) a stove to two rooms above the school & we are going to mess there. The men are going to have their Xmas dinner tomorrow & we have been moving about it all day. It is going to be by platoons 'cos we can't get a big enough place for the whole Coy. Should be goodo tho. Started to snow at 6.30 & was going at 10.30. Gave No 8 a bottle of whiskey for Xmas. Got a letter from Marie. Major Bill Hammond came up for a game of bridge. After
