This is an unconscionable way in which to make use of a book given to us by a beneficent government for the express purpose of winning the war. But I justify myself with three reasons.
X. The Army should not provide a book so obviously made for a diary.
B. You cannot win a war on paper, which is what we seem to be attempting.
Y. I cannot get anything else suitable to use.

However, enough, to it. A day or two ago while dozing in the early dawn I was woken up by a Turkish gun which started to shell the flat in front of us about ΒΌ mile off. It continued for about an hour
