Journal for the Month of August 1817.
B.G. Cattura Having trenched a considerable part of the ground meant for the Linnæan system I found the soil towards the lower part of the ground to be black or bog mould and as I am well aware this light soil would not answer for many plants without a mixture of stronger soil, not to disfigure any part of the garden by cutting the hills to procure soil to mix with this black mould I have began to make a road along the sides of the Bungaloe hill and I have no doubt great benefit will be derived by opening a communication with the main road for Bullock Bandus and about two feet of the surface is a fine rich loam and answers the purpose very well, the enterior of the Bank is in many places Kabooc rock which is easily cut with pick axes and makes fine walks, when this soil is cleared of the stones it is preferable to any other in building houses as its of a very binding nature.
The latter end of this month planted the following Cape of good Hope Bulbs presented by Mr. Dean collector of Colombo
Gladiolus marianus, Anthalyza Fragrans Antholyza ethiopica Ixia liliago Gladiolus indifollius, Ixia monadelphia, amaryllis Falcata Scilla marinus Ixia quadrangulars, Amaryllis Capense Oxalis rosacia
