The testicles of the male, enclosed in a bag scarcely pendulous, are placed in the hollowest part between the hind legs about 2 inches, from the anus.  The penis 2 inches in length and about 3 tenths of an inch in diameter is situated so immediately upon the foremost verge of the anus that the under part of the skin of its root forms one of the sides of the anus.  It has a prepuce and glans [glands]:  the prepuce is a mere skin which does not even cover the glans [glands];  the glan is about 8 or 9 tenths of an inch in length and beset with short, bony spines which point towards the root of the penis and project from the body of the glans [glands] just enough to be felt by the finger as it is pressed over them in a direction contrary to that in which they lie.  The opening of the urethra is a vertical slit which divides the end of the glans [glands].

From the structure of these parts it should seem that the penis remains at all times concealed within the opening of the anus except when it is called forth upon its own particular duties or necessarily forced out previous to the expulsion of the feces [faeces]. In the only male I examined the penis was protruding of [off] the
