from them. The number of teeth in both jaws amounts to 24.
The neck is thick and short and greatly restrains the motions of the head, which, according to the meaning of the common expression, looks as if it was stuck upon the shoulders.
From the neck the back arches a little as far as the loins, from whence it goes off at a flat slope to the hind most parts, where no tail is visible. A tail, however, may be found by carefully pressing the finger over the flat slope in a line with the back bone: After separating the hairs it is seen of some 5 tenths of an inch in length and from 3 tenths to 1 tenth in diameter. But this curious little tail seems to hold a much bolder proportion in the young than it does in the full grown animal.
The four legs are very strong and muscular: their length to the sole of the paw is 5.5 tenths inches; the distance between, across the chest, is 5.5 tenths inches. The paws are fleshy, round, large; being 1.9 tenths inches in diameter. The claws are five in number, attached to as many short digitations: the three middle claws are strong and about 8 or 9 tenths of an inch in length.
