[Page 3]

The eyes are small and rather sunken than prominent, but quick and lively:  they are placed about 2.5 tenths inches asunder a little below the centre of the imaginary triangle, or down towards the nose.  The nice co-adaptation of their ciliary processes which are covered with a fine hair seems to afford the animal the power of completely excluding anything that mt. prove hurtful.

The nose is large and spreading and by ending rather abrupt or squared off takes away an apex from the imaginary equilateral triangle.  Its surface is rough and granulated.  The nostrils are large, long and capable of being closed;  they stand angularly with each other, and a channel is continued from them to the upper lip which is divided like the hare's.  The whiskers are rather thick and strong and are in length from 2 to 3.5 tenths inches.

The opening of its mouth is small.  There are two long grass cutting teeth in the front of each jaw like those of the Kangaru [Kangaroo];  behind them is a vacancy for an inch or inch and half, then arise two small canine teeth of equal height with and so much similar to eight molares [molars] situated behind as scarcely to be distinguished
