The prevalence of Southerly winds, renders Port Philip easily accessible, but in the same proportion the egress is difficult; Point Schank bearing SE & Cape Otway SW, it is obvious that with the wind at South a Ship would not be able to clear either, and as we have found the wind steady in that point for many days together and often blowing very hard, the knowledge of this circumstance will certainly prevent Whalers, from ever making at a place of rendezvous to this may also be added the danger of the Coast between Port Philip & Western port, a tremendous surf breaking even in the calmest weather, at a mile or two distant from the shore. The wreck of a large boat built partly of Teak and partly of the Port Jackson She Oak (beef wood) was found here; but nothing appeared that could lead to a discovery of what she was -
