Birds
Birds are by no means so plenty as the unfrequented state of the port might lead us to expect, and this too appears more conspicuous as this is the Season when the young leave the nests; the water birds are black swans, Ducks, Teal, black and pied shags, Pelicans, gulls, a few Curlews, red bills, & Herons. Of Land birds the scarcity is still greater, Eagles, Crows, Ravens, the Quail, & varieties of the Parrot tribe and the bronzed Pigeon were shot and one egg of an Emu was found.
Fish
Fish I have no hesitation in asserting to be so scarce, that it can never be depended on as a source of effectual relief in the event of scarcity. Several varieties of the Genus of Rays, are almost the only ones we have caught, and a whole days work with the sieve sometimes has not produced a dish of fish.
