Mr. Jackson however on applying to the Master of the Fortune (V) received an answer (U) expressing his surprise at Captain Short's having found fault with him, for he had made no complaint.

On the 11th March the Justina proposing to leave us very soon for St. Helena I received a Letter (W) from Captain Short with Private written at the beginning proposing a reconcilliation on these principles; that he knew too much of the Service to think that any dispute between Officers could much benefit either, and that a mutual Friend might be chosen who could candidly explain both our sentiments and bring about a Friendship which could not be shaken by a very trifle.  This overture I rejected.  Soon
