have been so treated by impositions from those who consider themselves of the superior class, as would have made them all vassals in a little time, which every person out of debt is now independant.

     I am extremely sensible of the advantages which will insue by respectable persons coming out as Settlers, and altho I hope we shall have a number, yet I cannot help telling you we have felt much disappointment in the Blaxlands - when they arrived (from Sir Joseph's recommendation) I had them every day with us, and gave a public Dinner to introduce Mrs. Blaxland to all the Ladies of the Colony.   He came out immersed in Merchantile pursuits, and in place of keeping up the Society he was introduced to, he has connected himself with a Simeon Lord, and Mrs. Blaxland has given herself up to the company of improper Women, which none of our Ladies approve of.  I have given Mr. Blaxland a handsome income from Government and hope he will do well. 

     You will, I am certain, believe when I tell you, that Doctor Townson received a hearty welcome
