The liberty which persons took was irksome; if a request made was not complied with, altercation took place, and ill-will followed, farther attempts were then made to gain the object, and at last the Governor consenting, he was turned into ridicule, while the parties themselves became envious of each other. Government has been too intimately connected with society, & a few Individuals, such as two or three, have been by that means able to disturb it - it is a difficulty not suddenly to be got the better of. The disturbers will always be at work until they find they are defeated without any visible resistance.
I began my Government as I shall end it, polite and attentive to every one, and, gratifying shewn by every consistent means in my power; but great regard is due to more than Sydney.
