cultivation than from the Cataract to an extent of many miles in length and breadth.  There I hope to have them proceed in the course of this month or early in the next.

I promised to give an account of the New River to the Westward, but although it is not more than twelve miles distant yet my time has been too much employed to permit my visiting it, but I hope in the ensuing summer to have more leisure as the Governor has appointed three Superintendents for the public works which will be a great relief to me, having hitherto done that duty myself, with this and the different collections I have made, I hope you will not think I have been idle.

By the Governors last letter I am informed that my salary as Lieut Govr of the Territory is only £256 per annm. and that he has written his opinion on this insufficiency both to yourself and the Secretary of State.  Should there not be a probability of my succeeding in having a Corps, which will absolutely be required for the Service of this Colony, I beg to request your interest
