disadvantages I have the fullest confidence of being able to produce in our time some changes for the better, and see the Colony assume a more cheering aspect than it does at present, indeed I have already done a great deal.
The Inhabitants are healthy and marriages increase - in my late arduous surveys I ascertained the Married Women were 395 – Concubines 1035 – legitimate Children 1007 – Natural Children 1025 by which it appears the married state gives nearly more than two to one the other nearly equal.
It is recommended in my instructions to persevere in the System laid down by Governor King of a reforms prohibition of any quantity of Spirits without a licence from me for that purpose. This I shall rigidly attend to - it has been a great Evil in this Country; but its being used as an article of barter has added to its pernicious effects more than by quantity imparted, beyond all conception.
