[Page 8]

Water was called Mo, Mou, and Mous. The river Indus, like all rivers, was held sacred, and had the name of Mausolus. Mau-Sol is the water of the Sun. The Muses, [indecipherable], are said to have been denominated from water. Moses received his name, because he was taken out of the waters. The northern nations call the Seahorse the Morse. This is only a contraction of Mo-horse; and signifies a horse of that element.

Mar, Mor, Mur, signifies the sea. When you have passed the Euxine to the north, you came to a secondary sea, called now the sea of Caffa: but of old Marmasa. Maxmar signifies a double and secondary sea. From the noise of the sea probably came murmuss; from its smoothness marmor.

Maris, Maeris, [Mansh?], likewise signify the sea; also a lake, or stagnant bed of waters. To say -- the lake Maeris in Egypt -- is redundant: it is like to the calling of Mount Aetna, Mount Gibel. Gibel signifies a Mountain so does Maeris a lake.
