We lately had heavy & frequent Rains, few fish are caught, & the Natives very much distressed for food, several have been seen dying in the Woods, & visibly for want of food. I am in hopes that I shall meet with some in this situation, as it will I think reconcile them to us, for it is not necessary to say, that I should relieve them.

To the few observations I have made permit me to say [?] that I think they merit a better Character than what will be given them by Monsr. La Perouse, who said that the Country & People were very inferior to any he had met with.  I think they do not want Courage, they very readily place a confidence, & I have some reason to believe do not betray a confidence placed in them, tho' they are easily offended, & then know no bounds to this revenge, is it not the same with all Uncivilised peeple? I likewise think
