JANUARY, 1916.

  on Sarapeum

the place itself is situated about 1  ½ miles from the Suez canal   it is [indecipherable]  and sand also subject to dust storms and hot winds which are very uncomfortable.   we go swimming  the canal 2 a week and I assure it varies the monotony when I came through the canal at June last 1915 there were trenches on both sides of the canal but at present they have them 12 miles back the canal areoplanes are constant visitors belonging of course  to the allies war boats are still stationed in the canal. if the turks happen to attack the canal everything is ready for a hearty welcome.
