Farming & fruit growing appeared to be the sole pursuits of the rural inhabitants, & the old cow, so inevitable in Australian scenery, disappearing practically altogether. Cherry orchards appeared a mass of white blooms while peach trees were also showing in blossom. At 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning we ran into Lyons where we stopped for about an hour & breakfasted. Hot water was supplied by the French Red Cross, so that we were able to make tea & bovril. Between Lyons & the Loire beautiful stretches of dark green spruce forests alternated with the farmlands. Numerous tunnels lead through the rocky hills, one of which took thirteen minutes to pass through, & on doing so we ran from sun pleasant sunshine at the entrance to partially
