Lemnos when we arrived seemed bleak & miserable. But it was the middle of winter when the fields were bear bare, & the few fruit trees surrounding the small villages were leafless. The island has a population of some 35,000 who are contained in Kastra [Kastron] the capital & in 37 other villages. The island is rich wheat land & as one stands on one of the basalt hills & looks up the valleys which mark out into farm plots like a chess board, it forms a very pleasant picture. Small flocks of long-woolled sheep tended by a shepherd with his picturesque mountaineer's costume, feed on the hills; donkeys, pigs & oxen browse or wallow in the marshes. The villages with their little stone houses, winding lanes, their church, market square & stone wall form a pleasant contrast to the mud villages of the Egyptians. All the wheat
