and live on what they get off the boats, particularly troop ships. They scramble after money, food or anything else thrown to them. As we were to go ashore in the afternoon we threw them all the food we had, & they put bread, meat, soap, tins of jam etc all in one pile.

One would have his mouth full of meat with about 6 inches hanging out and still try to get more. After a scramble it was pretty dirty too as there was about 6" of coal dust
