The Sergt. Major also explained the reason for going slow after leaving Colombo. It appears the ship's Captain had instructions to go 3 days in the usual direction to Suez before turning south. As will be seen by previous notes he turned south after going about 60 miles saving thereby some hundred pounds worth of coal.
The ship's people accused the Sargents Mess of losing £30 of crockery, plates, etc. while there were hardly more than 30/- worth in whole mess.
Thursday 22nd
Still working on Measles Isolation (German measles) and cases are coming in very fast. There are now about 30 in hospital suffering from this disease.

Most of the boys on board are trying to study French in anticipation of going to France to train. Received by wireless today some very good news. Russians pursuing Austrians now through Bukovina and at foot of Carpathians. Italians defeat Austrians in Trentino, lull at Verdun but British penetrated German line in 10 places the Munsters & Anzacs coming in for special mention.
Weather unsettled all day and cool for this part.
Thursday 29th
Sighted land at about 9 a.m. and entered the Bay outside Dakar Harbour, French Senegal, Africa at about 11 a.m.
