<p class="page" id="a2364009">[Page 9]</p><p>fire was deafening we were right up against the land now steaming along in darkness not a light on the boat all smoking was Strictly prohibited for fear of attracting the turks attention which would mean a shower of shell fire. the bombardment from the boats onto the hills we were steaming slowly along in the midst them and the Rifle fire on the hills and the stray bullets whizzing in the water was wonderful the strict silence which was maintained on board, and at 10 oclock we pulled up in pitch dark stayed there for about 2 hours not a light or a sound on board during the whole time, there was ships all around us bombarding the hills, a few stray bullets came from the land. one struck a sailor on board just above the knee which laid him out and that was the only casualty we had</p>
