Stopped!

After his first night in the trenches beyond Flers a newly arrived Second Lieutenant in the 12th Brigade paraded to the M.O.

"My heart has stopped, Doc!"

The M.O., feeling that he had gone to pieces on account of his maiden [?] introduction into a very lively sector, sent him back with a note advising the Colonel to keep him at Battalion Hqrs. in order to break him in gradually before sending him back to the Front Line.

Next day the C.O. asked him how he was, "Pretty bad, Sir. My water has stopped now!"

'That's Good! You're the kind of man we want around here!   Try to infleuence some of the others. Some of the beggars pump anywhere!"

Two days later the Colonel again inquired.

"Still bad, Sir. My bowels have stopped now."

'That's better still!" The Colonel patted him on the shoulder. A few more like you would be a godsend around here!"

"Blanc"
