The whole  crowded Y.M.C.A. hut at Liverpool was vociferously calling "Encore! Encore!" as a great favourite - a Mosman girl - retired into the wings. Long Bill Wilkinson, from beyond the Darling, and just in camp that day, got annoyed for he also liked the girl. Standing up on a form he shouted:

"Encore be Dammed! Let the same girl sing again!"

S.R.D was the brand on the earthenware gallon containers of West Indian rum. Each jar was supposed to contain 64 nips - eight to a pint, quite a good nip, as the rum was very strong.

I never learned just what S.R.D. meant, to us it just meant Rum. To the Diggers the letters meant:   Soon Runs Dry and Seldom Reaches Destination.
