[Page 23]

The first lobbed 70 yards away, and not only made a great noise, but shook the ground near them.

"They make some noise, dont they?" one man asked.

"They shake the ground a bit, don't they?" added a second.

"They're some powerful, all rght!" was the third's opinion.

But lying in the sunken road, they didn't really appreciate the sound and concussion.   So they fired a second and a third, and were just on the point of firing a fourth when a runner came breathlessly  ducking along the road.

"The C.O. says to stop the bombs at once.   They've broken  every window down this end of town, knocked down crockery everywhere, and generally frightened the life out of the Frenchies."

Later on the C.O. himself came along.

"Don't let the people here know they were our bombs or they'll break us  with claims.   They think there's a Fritz up above the clouds dropping his eggs."

So, after we had camouflaged our remaining bombs, we strolled into town among the white-faced civilians gazing skywards and exclaiming hatefully "Les sales  Bosches! Les trés sales  Bosches!"   "Oui" replied, "Bombs", "les beaucoup sales Bosches!"
