The 15th Battalion had a Digger with a cleft palate, and, whenever it could be managed, he palled up with one of the roughest and toughest of the Sister Battalion, the 13th, and they generally finished their estaminet outings in the Brigade clink.
Wandering through Picquigny on one of their days off, the failed on several occasions to salute a Staff Officer, who finally halted them and asked "Do you know who I am?"
Cleft Palate made funny noises . "What's he trying to say?" shouted the S.O.
Say it again Bill;" advised the 13th; "the Staff Captain didn't get you. Say it slowly!"
Again the funny noises , very slowly, and the S.O. understood them to be "Ere's a bloke who don't know who 'e is."
