1196      Mathew Paris tells us that villiens a [Sad?] whose Landowner had the name of Cum barba in the Reign of Richd 1st because he wore his beard when other people were shaven
he is said by Hollingshead to have worn his Long beard indespite of them that Counterfeited the Normans & were for the most Part shaven  vol 2 p 529 & because he would resonable the ancient usage of the English nation vol 2, p 529
1328      English soldiers used to nourish their Beardes   Hollings head  p 890
1272      in Edwd 1sts. time men wore their Beards  - Long beards [heartless] &c
in 1st Elizabeth it was orderd by the Benchers of Lincolns inn that no fellow of the house should wear a beard of more than a Fortnights growth but in the Latter end of that year the Fashion of wearing beards so much increased that all orders against were Repeald  Nields Royal Progresse  vol1.p26
