Having explored the Gulph of Carpenteria & the parts to the Westward thereof you are to proceed to a carefull investigation & accurate survey of Torres Straits, & the Coast of New South Wales as low down as the Isles of Discretion; & when that shall have been completed, you are to examine & survey the whole of the remainder of the North & North West Coasts of New Holland, from

Cape Vandieu in Longitude 130 East to Cape Chatham; & especialy those parts of the Coast most likely to be fallen in with by Indiamen in their outward bound passages.

And you are to examine as particularly as your circumstances will allow the Bank that extends itself from the Trial Rocks towards Timer [Timor] in hopes that by fixing the depth & nature of the Soundings there you may do good service to the East India Companies Ships in case that passage should in future times be frequented.
When you shall have complated the whole of Surveys & Examinations as above directed, you are then to examine very carefully the East Coast of New Holland seen by Capt Cook, from Cape Flattery to the Bay of Inlets; & in order to refresh your people, & to give the advantage of variety to the Painters, you are at
