Journal of an oveland expedition from
Sydney New South Wales to Swan River under
command of Dr Ludwig Leichardt __ commencing
from the time of leaving the station at Jimba belonging to
Mr Dennis __
7 December left Jimba Mr Dennis / the owner
making the party a present of 20 sheep which together
with 88 which had been presented to the Dr prior to
reaching this place give us a stock of 108 of these animals
We have also 40 Bullocks & 270 goats - the party are
nine in number (viz, the Doctor, Mr Hely' Mr Mann
Myself & ^ Mr Turnbull and two men Perry, Boecking - Brown
a black fellow[,] Wommai also Black - following the
Condamine River we reached the station of a Mr Gogg
15 miles distant from Jimba where we camped for the night
8th __ Left Mr Gogg's for Stephens the last station till
we reach Swan River a short time after leaving Stephens
that[?] a dispute occurred between the Dr and Mr Mann
Mr Mann having some conscientious scruples in dri[ving]
a cow from Goggs without an order from Mr Rußell
it was however happily adjusted - this was a most exhausting
and tedious day's journey the party had charge of the
cattle not making the station till nearly dark - the Doctor
and myself being in charge of the Sheep and goats were com
pelled to camp in as was Mr Mann who afterward [???]
without dinner or supper.
This morning made Stephen station and camped for the
day - the party employed in washing their clothes in a
very primitive fashion _ The Dr especially so He washed
His trousers on him - Here we first met with the native
Wunye tree as spoken of by the Dr in his Port Essington expe
dition In the evening a young goat was killed being too
lame to travel ____
10 This day we made 10 miles in a Westward by North
direction following the course of the Condamine
and camped on its Banks about 10 past 2 P.M.
after 4 hours travelling & 3h from Dennis' - about 7 miles from Stephens I
discovered the head of a horse supposed to be the
remains of a horse left by Mr Hodgsen when in search
of Dr Leichardt and who left it in consequence of seeing a
number of black fellows ißuing from a Miall scrub a short
distance from the skull I also found a lot of bones which
appeared to have been burnt evidently those of a horse
