7th October,1918.

My Dear Marks,

I should so much liked to have seen you before you left us, but as this was not possible, I write a line to wish you goodbye and the best of good times on your furlough, which you have so fully deserved for all the good and strenuous work you have put in during these last four years. I am sure you know how much I appreciate this, and how delighted I am that you are having this rest, especially as it will enable you to spend Christmas with your family, which will indeed be nice for you. You know, too, how heartily we shall welcome you back at the completion of your furlough to be in at the finish of these Germans.

Again with all good wishes,

Yours very sincerely.
W.R.Birdwood.
