NATIVE PLACE NAMES.
From C. Strehlow, Hermannsburg: €” €œIn
an article with reference to the nomencla-
ture of South Australia it was stated that
Surveyor Lees, who adopted the name
€˜Oodnadatta, €™ left no record of its mean-
ing. It is, to my knowledge, an Aranda
word, meaning €˜the blossom of thu mulga €™
(Acacia aneura), and should be spelt pho-
netically €˜Utnadata. €™ May I also add that
the meaning of €˜Kopperamanna €™ (which
should be €˜Kaparamara €™) is €˜roots [in the
form] of a hand. €™ €˜Kapara €™ means a root
and €˜mara €™ the hand. €˜Kaparamara €™ is a
Dieri word, which was corrupted by the
whites into €˜Kopperamanna. €™
