before dark but at about 7.30 we saw the glare from a lighthouse. Soon after we saw the light, which though just on the horizon (that is the light itself, not the lighthouse which must have been much further off) lighted up the whole ship.

It was the Lizard light which flashes every four or five seconds. Later on we picked out the Eddystone light which though not as brilliant as the Lizard which is like a searchlight but is a much better light
