Chaucer who lived in the middle of the 15th Century gives in his Parsons tale an curious dissertation on the clothing of Englishmen in his time exagerated no doubt but still tho a Caricature no doubt a strong likeness of what was then the fashion
We Learn from this that the Cutted Stops or hauseline were the covering usd as breeches but not sufficient to conceal the Breech of the wearer
in the Print of Queen Elizabeths visit to the   the overstocks, understocks & possibly the Peticoat are distinctly exhibited    this was in the year  p124
1503      Then have they hosen which be of Divers Fashions as French 
hose overstocks Galley hose & venetians   The french hose are of two divers makings the first containing Leng[th] breadth nor sideness sufficient to make them round  The other Containeth neither Leng[th] breadth nor Sideness being drawn out with Costly ornaments with [lannions] annexd reaching down beneath the knees;  Gally hosen are made very Large & wide reaching to the knees only with 3 or 4 guards each laid down along either hose  The venetian hose reach beneath the Knee to the gartering Place of the Leg where they are tied finely with Silk points & Lacd on with [Rows?] of Lace or Gardes as the other before
nether Stocks      then have they netherstocks to these Gay hosen not of cloth but of Jarnsey worsted thread silk or such like. Curiously knit with a seam down the Leg with Quirks & clocks about the ancles interlaced with gold & silver they Cost a Royal or twenty shell or more  Stubbes anatomy of abuses  a nether Stocke Lt Tibiale Veron  
They have boot Lace which , draw over their boots & reach to the waist made of fine Linnen  these are worked from the gartering Place upwards with needle work in silk of all colors with birds fowls & antiques which needle work costeth one Pair 4, 6 or even ten Pound  Stubbes
other nations deride us because we spend more money on our - then on the Rest of our bodies
