Sunday 15/4/14

Coast line of Ceylon in view at dawn. Later on could distinguish strips of narrow beach & dense foliage.

Country very mountainous. A mass of peaked small mountains half hidden in mist. Anchored just outside Colombo breakwater about 2 P.M. All along the coast saw great number of sampans fishing, they are about 10 ft long with a square sail & usually contain ½ doz niggers and go about in fleets.

Colombo is right on a well defined regular coastline. There is no harbour but a long breakwater on the S. West. The buildings are all red-tiles & built of some terra cotta coloured substance & bricks.
