back to her old station or perhaps help to smash the German warships now in the Pacific. H.M.A.S. "Melbourne" now in charge of convoy. The following is a message received :- On Sunday night the Emden passed within 20 miles of the convoy. The wireless was silenced and the van of the convoy was so darkened that she might have passed 5 miles ahead of us. Had she passed astern certain vessels, were showing lights 6 miles or more & the Emden would probably have taken toll of the Convoy before escort could have attacked her. Attribute this danger to neglect on part of commanders
